Additional Activities
Birthday Parties
Some people may dismiss their value when it comes to elderly folks. But the truth is that birthday parties can be very special and meaningful for seniors. Every month, GAV holds a birthday party for the residents. We provide food, fruits, and use a theme (e.g., Mother’s Day /Father’s Day/Valentine’s day/Halloween, etc.) to conducts small games for the residents. And we will also prepare gifts for the birthday person.
Field Trips
It’s important for elderly to spend time outside whenever possible. Studies have shown that vitamin D, created and activated by sunlight, helps fight conditions like osteoporosis, cancer, depression and even heart attacks. Pain and stress are also reduced with exposure to natural light and fresh air. GAV arranges field trips for residents three times a year. We took our residents to Hsi Lai Temple, The Wayfarers Chapel, The Arboretum, Santa Monica Pier, Huntington Library, Griffith Observatory, etc. in the past two years.
Semi-annual Activities (Chinese New Year and Mid-Autumn Festival)
Though the lifestyles of our Chinese immigrants have kept changing overseas, the importance of the traditional festivals in our Chinese elderly lives has not faded. GAV invites local dignitaries, singers, and dancers with our residents to celebrate the Chinese traditional festival every year. We provide delicious food, excellent performance to all our residents and guests.
Rite Aid
Older adults are especially likely to get dangerously ill from catching flu. While flu seasons can vary in severity, during most seasons, people 65 years and older bear the greatest burden of severe flu disease. GAV requests a pharmacist from Rite Aid to provide free flu shots every year in September.
